Project Description: Food waste has been one of the main problems of our world, with Indonesia being one of the biggest contributors. On the other side, there are still a lot of people who are starving and malnourished in Indonesia. So, it is our responsibility to treat our food with respect and consume carefully in order to decrease the food waste amount. This is the problem I want to help tackle with my project, Food Ranger.
In our household, food waste usually comes from over buying, when we buy more than what we need. Because food, especially fresh groceries have limited shelf life, the excess goes bad before we can consume them. Second, storing food in a wrong way will make food easily go bad. Third, lack of ideas to cook usually makes us buy more and more groceries while we still have other ingredients in our fridge.
In my project Food Ranger, there is information on 1) shelf life of various food ingredients to help people plan their grocery shopping, 2) best way to store groceries to maintain freshness, and 3) suggestions on simple recipes to cook with whatever we have in the fridge. I hope this project can contribute to food waste control in families across Indonesia and the world.
